Face Lift

Q. Who is the best candidate for a facelift?

The best candidate is someone with laxity of the skin on the face and neck skin with a pronounce drooping of the jowls often accompanied by mild to moderate wrinkling of facial areas.

Q. What are the benefits to having a facelift?

Patients can enjoy a more youthful look with removal of excess skin, and a redraping of skin to show a more taught and rejuvenated appearance.

Q. How long does the surgery usually last?

The surgery can last 4 to 6 hours depending on the surgeons selected technique and if additional procedures are added such as eyelids, forehead, chin implant or a fat graft.

Q. Is there anything special I should know before surgery?

If you smoke you will be asked to stop well in advance of the surgery. Some of your current medications could be discontinued prior to surgery if they increase bleeding such as Asperin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and some vitamin/homeopathic regimes. If you use any chemical agents on your hair you will be asked to do so in advance of the surgery since you cannot have any of these procedures for a month or more after surgery.

Q. What are some of the risks involved with the surgery?

There are always risks with any surgery but fortunately with facelifts they are infrequent.
Potential complications with facelifts may include hematoma or an accumulation of blood under the skin, infection or a reaction to the anesthesia. You can help minimize certain risks by following the advice and instructions given to you by your physician before and after surgery.

Q. What is the usual recovery period?

After your facelift procedure you may spend the night in the hospital or return home accompanied by a friend or family member. There will be mild discomfort with swelling and bruising which lasts a couple of weeks unless you have added other procedure such as a fat graft or chin implant. Your recovery will determine your return to work and daily activities but the usual time required is 14 days. No strenuous activity or heavy lifting is permitted during your early recovery. However, light walking and moving around can be resumed by the patient. The final look and feel of your facelift is reached approximately 3 months after surgery. You will continue under the doctor’s care for several months with advise on skin care and a healthy lifestyle to maximize the results of your procedure.
